Can I continue to post April 09 invoices / payments, before March has been closed off?

Absolutely, it is just like any other month end and in fact you can continue right into the new year and just go back and do the rollover once the accounts are finalized by your accountant.  You should lock off March from any further changes though, as soon as you have finalized the draft reports for your accountant to start doing their part.
